Unable to publish - "file name is same as subdirectory"

NNTP-Posting-Host:  12.167.227.144

I've setup extra logging at my vsftpd server, and can't see any way the
editor could have determined this error message it pops up on
publishing:

The filename "index.html" is already in use by another subdirectory.

All I see in my FTP log is a connect, a pwd, type i, and change to
PASV.

What could be going wrong here?
I'm using Mozilla 1.7.5

Any other tips to try to debug this appreciated.

And I made sure there is no subdirectory called "index.html" on my
server!
I tried various publishing addresses:
ftp://mysite.homeip.net/myusername/public_html
ftp://mysite.homeip.net/~myusername/
I can both of the above work, and the login succeed. But no ls, or file
transfer is done by the editor.
