Yes, most people until recently believed nothing 
but windows or dos would run on the i386 architecture, but that has 
of course never been true. GNU/Linux acually hit the market *before* 
winnderrz (1991 or '92, I forget which), as did several BSD UNIX-variants

If tying up host resources unnecessarily to compensate for omitting hardware

I guess I see it more from an engineers perspective, which means I think it's
impressive that anyone is sufficiently wasteful &/or dishonest &/or shortsighted 
enough to consider such a concept "impressive", lol.
